Apple the media and me

Let me start off this rant by stating for the record that I am an Apple fan girl from way back. While I used PCs in graduate school, my first computer at my rocket science job was a Macintosh Quadra 610 way back in 1992, and I never looked back. Once I used a Macintosh, even way back at System 7, I realized what a steaming pile of crap Windows was and began my now decade plus old love affair with all things Apple.

This was a tough love sort of a thing during those dark times, before the return of THE STEVE, before the iMac, before the iPod and, yes, even before the iPhone. I was able to do more on my Mac than I’d ever been able to to do on any PC I’d ever owned or used in the computer lab. I was never going to go back.

This wasn’t easy to do. At work keeping Macs on the desk of scientists and engineers was under constant attack. The IT folks wanted a vanilla IT infrastructure to make their jobs easier – never mind what the best tool was for us to actually do our jobs. I have made a bit of a name for myself as *The* Apple fanatic and sole protector/defender of the faith for all of my science and engineering mac-o-philes here on the lab. No matter how much they wanted us to use a Windows PC, we just weren’t going to do it.

It became easier to be an Apple fan once the world started to get a taste of genius with the launch of the iPod, then the iPhone, followed by the wonderful iPad. For some reason, though, the media or those who like to blab on the interwebs, doesn’t like to see a success story. Envy? The inability of some to enjoy the success of others? Closet Windows fans? Who knows. All I do know is that Steve Jobs just showed all of them what class looks like with his Apple iPhone 4 press conference this morning held out in Cupertino. I have never been more proud to wear my AppleFanGirl name than I am today.
